Alfred & Max was my student master thesis project back in 2004/05 which won an Animago Award in 2005. The plot was evolving around two inmates trying to escape their prison cell before the next shift would make his checkup rounds through the blocks. The game was basically a point and click adventure with a twist.
Each level was planned to have several variants how it could be solved. As the player proceed through levels he would use items which once used were consumed. Now if the player would get stuck at some point in the game he could go back and forth switching between current and earlier levels to find a different solution and put together his own personal “escape plan”.
So much for the concept. I made a prototype which covered one level, the protagonist team and a guard, but not the full extended gamelogic. The Environment was made in 3D Max, the lightning was pre-rendered and stored in lightmaps. The prototype was made with Virtools. A friend of mine recorded the music which is based on a track called “song of the volga boatman”.
